How does a Casambi Network retain its correct time & date?

Devices in a Casambi network run their own individual internal "clocks" and do not typically contain any battery backup. Thus, if they lose power, they also lose their "sense of time".

For a network to retain time & date information, at least one network device needs to be constantly powered ON. If other devices then lose power, they will automatically receive the time information from the powered unit when their power is restored.

If all units in the network lose power, when power is restored the time will not be correct. To resynchronize the time & date information, the network needs to be accessed via the Casambi App on a mobile device with internet connection. Alternatively, if a Casambi Cloud Gateway is part of the network, the time will be automatically reseeded.

Note that, because each node runs it's own independent internal "clock", there may be a time drift between devices over an extended period. Also, devices only store limited data of future sunrise and sunset times, and date information of the next coming daylight saving time change. For this reason, if your network is using time or date events in any way (i.e. Timers/schedules, Time-based scenes, or Animation scenes), the time & date information should be periodically reseeded to the network. This can be achieved by various methods.

  • Connect to the network (approximately once every 6-months minimum) via the Casambi app on a device with internet connection.
  • Install a Casambi Cloud Gateway on your network. If using firmware version 46 or higher, the Cloud Gateway automatically synchronizes the time to Casambi network every two hours. Gateways using older firmware synchronize the time each time the Gateway connects to the network and when network configuration changes. In practice this usually happens so often that any network time drift is limited.

Casambi Ecosystem partners offer suitable devices with battery backup for network timekeeping in case of a power outage. Note that these still may not ensure the network date information is updated. Please see our Ecosystem product offering at https://casambi.com/ecosystem/.
