The difference of Broadcast and Addressed control in DALI

Both Broadcast and Addressed control modes are offered by Casambi when integrating a DALI system to Casambi control. Understanding the difference of these control types helps in designing and troubleshooting lighting systems effectively.

What is broadcast control?

Broadcast control means sending a command to all devices on the DALI line at the same time.

  • Individual addresses are not configured.
  • All lights in the same DALI bus behave the same way - ideal for basic setups
  • Control of individual lights or groups is not possible

Addressed control targets specific devices or groups using their unique DALI addresses.

  • Individual lights or defined groups can be controlled.
  • Supports comples lighting scenes.
  • Devices must be assigned addressess during commissioning

Consult the relevant product datasheet fixture profile definitions for more information on which fixture profile offers broadcast and addressed control.

Tip! Even in systems that use addressed control, broadcast commands can still be useful for global actions like turning off all lights during a fire alarm or power-down event. Broadcast command can also used in troubleshooting situation to test DALI bus functionality.
